Using Guided Access in the iPad or iPhone - Lock an iPad in to one app

Have you ever wondered if you can temporarily restrict your iOS device to a single app. Apple's iOS Guided Access keeps the iPad in a single app, and allows you to control which features are available. To start Guided Access, triple-click the Home button in the app you want to use.

You can access Guided Access by selecting:

Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Guided Access (Learning)

Guided Access can help students stay on task and focused on content. Because Guided Access is an accessibility feature for individual students, it requires that teachers manually setup each device. This is not recommended for assessments.

Some considerations:
  • Set a passcode when you turn it on and can also turn it off with Touch ID.
  • Allow to play a sound and have the remaining Guided Access time spoken before time ends.
  • Enable the Accessibility Shortcut for quick access to setting options.
  • Check that you have not enabled the Magnifier under Accessibility as it uses the triple-click on the Home button to start it.

When you start Guided Access you will see options like:
  • Top:
    • Cancel and Start
  • Bottom:
    • Hardware Buttons (Sleep/Wake Button; Volume Buttons; Motion; Keyboards)
    • Touch
    • Time Limit
