After watching the videos, I have to admit that the 'Dawn of the Net' is one of my favorite videos for networks. Although this video is a bit outdated, it is definitely a highly comprehensible video about networks. It portrays the various components of the network using excellent animations. The video about the history of Ethernet has given me the possibility to relate various technologies that I know of which are directly or indirectly related to Ethernet. I was impressed with the idea of what is expected from Ethernet in the future. The idea of enabling networking capabilities to devices that we use everyday. This is a step to take advantage of technology to control and monitor everything around us.
One of the things that I would like to do is to get my hands on equipment and construct a small network. The best way to get a better understanding is to see these concepts in operation. Maybe, it would be interesting to install a server and use various components of a network like routers or hubs. The other aspect would be to learn about the best configuration of servers depending on the tasks that they will have. Further, I would like to learn how to monitor these computers remotely.
Finally, I would like to go on a tour to the network facilities and have someone briefly explain to use their daily chores. If possible, I would be willing to attend a workshop organized by the university in relation to the issues of security and data protection.

I totally agree - a hands on test would probably really clear things up for me, to see how it all works. That is sometimes the best way to learn - and this would be something that would make a lot of sense when you are putting the pieces together instead of reading about it.
Security is such an issue these days - I wonder if such workshops exist?
