Trimester Three - End of Term Project - An Educational Game in Scratch

This is my last project of the year for my Integrated Technology Class. A detailed description is presented below. Please bear in mind that we may be doing some additions or changes along the way if we believe it is important for the process that we will go through and end product as well. More information to come soon.

Description:

Students will learn how to make an educational game. They start by using a Pages document that helps them create a design for the look and feel and behavior of the educational game.

Learning Objectives:

1. Design and implement an Educational game in Scratch.

Lesson Introduction:

• Tell students that the upcoming lessons involve making a game.

• It is useful to show the students a finished game at the start so they have an idea what they are aiming for.

• The first part of the lesson involves designing the game using Pages before writing the game in Scratch.

• Once the design in Pages is complete students will create the game in Scratch.

Lesson Breakdown:

1. Students use the Game Design table structure to guide themselves through parts of the process of design.

2. After reviewing the design document, students begin to choose the characters and backgrounds for their game.

3. A more detailed explanation is shown below.

Introduction to the Educational Game Project:

Your team of programmers has been contacted by the Elementary School teachers in order to create an Educational Game application that they can use in their classes with students. They have given you the liberty to select an area in the curriculum where you can assist their students to understand concepts and develop certain grade-level skills.

Your task is to gather all the necessary facts about the educational context and design a Scratch project that can later be shared with them through the Internet. Using your programming skills, you will create a fully functional online application for children in Elementary School.

Your team must complete this project in four weeks. Each team member will have to create and update his/her own Pages report. At the end of the project, the team will prepare a final version of the report to be presented to the Elementary School teachers.

To start, you will create a report using Pages that will serve as a graphic organizer for all the section of your report as seen in the section below. This report will be provided to the teacher upon completing the project.

Report Sections:

  • Project Programmers and Team Name

  • Game Topic

  • Game Objectives

  • Algorithm

  • Game Interface - Organization and Design - Description of the sprites and background

  • Game Controls - Navigation

  • Game Play - Rules, Goals, Feedback

  • Improvements

Structure of the Pages Report:

The Pages report will have a header with the “name of the educational game”. The footer of the page will have your name and the team name separated by a hyphen. The body of the page will be entirely dedicated to the report sections. You will create a table of size 9 x 2 (9 rows and 2 columns). In the first column under the heading “Section”, you will add all the eight sections of the report. The second column will have a header name “Description”.

Save the pages report in the "Integrated Technology" folder under "Documents". If you don't have one, please create it now. The file must be saved in the following format: Educational Game Report [Your name].pages

Note: An example will be provided in a video. Make sure you add your name at the end of the filename. It will make it easier for me to identify the owner of the document. The video DOES NOT show the name part, but you still have to do it.
