Swift Playgrounds and Arduinos = Fun!

Today students had their first try at using Swift Playgrounds and Arduino kits. It was great to see girls and boys engaged and trying things out for the first time.

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs - light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message - and turn it into an output - activating a motor, turning on an LED, or publishing something online. Arduino is a microcontroller board that contains everything needed to support it; Students simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started. Students can tinker with UNO without worrying too much about doing something wrong.

Swift Playgrounds is a revolutionary new app for iPad that makes learning Swift interactive and fun. Students can Solve puzzles to master the basics using Swift, a powerful programming language created by Apple and used by professionals to build many of today’s most popular apps. Students can take on a series of challenges and step up to more advanced creations. Swift Playgrounds requires no coding knowledge, so it’s perfect for students just starting out. It also provides a unique way for seasoned developers to quickly bring ideas to life. And because it’s built to take full advantage of iPad, it’s a first-of-its-kind learning experience.

I will keep this class format for a while, so stay tuned for more information.
